Chair – Dave Maffitt
Dave Maffitt is the current Chair of the Volunteer Airdrie Society. Born in Calgary and raised on a small farm near Carstairs, he is an avid and lifelong volunteer. He joined Volunteer Airdrie in mid-2013, just as he was wrapping up a 6 year involvement with Airdrie Minor Basketball, including 5 years as its President. Dave was the Chairperson for the Basketball Sport at the Airdrie 2014 Alberta Summer Games, where he organized and supervised 75 volunteers at 4 venues over 3 days. When Dave is not volunteering, he finds time to work in the Calgary oil patch as an oil & gas marketing consultant for junior and intermediate exploration companies. His company Phoenix Energy Marketing Consultants currently assists about 25 companies. In his “spare time”, Dave also teaches and trains in Shotokan karate at the Airdrie JKA Karate dojo and acts as Secretary for the Karate Alberta Association, Alberta JKA Karate Association and Airdrie Discovery Toastmasters Club.
Vice Chair – Dirk Bannister
I have been a part of the volunteer community here in Airdrie, and in other Alberta cities and in the USA for over 47 years and have had a considerable amount of experience both as a Board Member and as an Executive Director working for Non-Profit Boards and Municipalities.
My wife, Cheryl and I first moved to Airdrie in 1979 and returned to Airdrie in 2001 after living in the United States for two years. After about a decade in Camrose, we returned to Airdrie in the summer of 2015.
Our two daughters, now living in Calgary and Fernie, B.C., were raised in Airdrie and we have considered Airdrie our home (even though we have been away twice!) since first moving here in 1979.
Treasurer – Carmen Vetian
Carmen has been a Certified General Accountant (CGA) since 2001, in good standing with the Certified General Accountants Association of Alberta.
Since 1999, she has worked primarily in public practice, in various roles from junior apprentice to senior manager, and for the past 5 years the Owner/Partner of her own accounting and tax practice in Airdrie, Alberta.
She has also had the opportunity to work in industry as a corporate tax analyst for the Canadian division of an international company. In addition, she was also a corporate tax analyst in the oil and gas industry, also involved in planning, preparation and reporting of all the corporate tax to tax authorities and international based parent corporation. Within these roles, she has had various responsibilities for all tax compliance and due diligence processes for regular tax reporting requirements and also for acquisitions and corporate reorganizations.
A professional accountant is an essential part of a business, and Carmen partners with her clients to assist them in their success, and truly enjoys helping businesses and people with their tax planning and strategies for the future.
Secretary – Dorothy May
Dorothy May is proud to have called Airdrie home for my family since 2000. She enjoys a successful career as a Behavior Therapist and Clinical Service Coordinator, working with families who have children diagnosed with special needs (primarily ASD), and working in the elementary, middle and high schools on the Tsuu T’ina First Nation. Dorothy has always appreciated the small town feel that Airdrie offers; seeing our beautiful city continue to grow, increased her desire to become more involved in the community. In the spring of 2016 Dorothy reached out to Volunteer Airdrie Society and applied to become a member of their Board of Directors. Since joining the VA team, Dorothy has actively worked to initiate and implement the VA-LEAD, Youth Leadership and Volunteer Development Program since spring 2017. Dorothy’s goals and motivation to continue with her volunteer efforts are to: empower youth through skill development, provide support towards their successful experiences within our community and to build their confidence and belief that they can make positive impacts on society.
Director – Nina Nath
Volunteerism is very much part of my upbringing from an early age, and my grandfather inspired me. He was a Doctor and would provide medical assistance in any form free to people who were unable to provide medical needs for themselves. For his humanities he received the President of India’s Humanitarian Award. Plus Mother Teresa would come to our school, once a month, and involve the students in volunteerism. I have volunteered as a co-coordinator representing the Corporation I was working for, got involved with United Way, convincing as many staff as possible to contribute through monthly payroll deductions any amount, to United Way. I was in the banking and investment business for over 18 years. Have been a Director for North Rocky View which is now Community Links. When the Youth Program started by the City, I was also involved and tried to rid our society about Gay individuals perception, and promoted their rights as individuals with different bodies and feelings not to discriminate. I have advocated for accessibility for People with Disabilities and Seniors, as well as promote awareness of People with Disabilities and their needs and promote them as individuals with different abilities and different needs, specially with policy makers and politicians as an individual and did not take advantage of my position with Community Links. As well it is important to change the perception of our society that every Disability is different and unique and it does not necessarily mean that all Disabled People are mentally disabled as well and useless. I have been a Director of Volunteer Airdrie since its inception, and left for a few years, and am very happy to be back being a part of Volunteer Airdrie again. Personally, I am a Person with Physical Disabilities and understand them, and I encourage them to be part of some organization either as a worker or as a volunteer.
